Social & Entertaining Gift Guide

Although I was born under the Fire sign (I’m a Leo and proud to say it!) I never really considered myself to be a ‘social butterfly.’ Yes, I do like entertaining and hosting parties, taking selfies with my iPhone and my goal is to interview as many inspirational people from around the world I’m not one to get up on stage, a la Madonna, and strut my stuff (unless someone asked me to, of course). This gift guide is intended for your BFF, sister, aunt or any other charismatic person in your life that is a social butterfly in their own right.

1. Victoria’s Secret Stripe Makeup Mirror, $8 – A Social Butterfly’s worst nightmare? Getting caught looking terrible. Don’t let it happen.

2. Bath & Body Works Home Fragrance Oil in Cranberry Pear Bellini, $6 – If you’re throwing a party consider burning a fragrant oil to get your place smelling fresh and inviting.

3. Hudson’s Bay Company Collection Christmas Crackers, $17.50 – Perfect for the host who likes to have a little fun with their food.

4. Filomena Cake Server, $16 – Charming and useful, this cake server will get more attention than you (no wait, you don’t want that).

5. All Occasion Card Set by Kate Spade New York, $30 – Show off your etiquette with this simple and sophisticated card set and thank each and every guest in style.

6. ‘Keep Calm and Text Me’ iPhone case, $6.50 – Probably the best way to reassure your BFF that you are only a text away when they’re in social need.

7. Shampure Soy Wax Candle, $34 – Because every girl needs some down time, pamper them with a naturally soy candle that will calm their senses and get them ready for the next party.

Beauty Gift Guide

bbgiftguideI am so excited to begin my Holiday Gift Guide series! I often read other blogs and take a look at their guides for gift giving ideas, but I thought (or rather, knew) it was finally time to make my own guide based on my favorite things. To start the series, I thought I would begin with a beauty guide that every makeup junkie will swoon over. I know I was just writing about it. (Note: None of these products were given to me – I chose them simply because I’ve used them and love them or I just really want them. However, I will do sponsored posts and if you would like to send me samples please read my full disclosure here).

1. Beauty Blender, $26 – Ever since I found this product, I cannot live without it. Its extremely easy to use and always makes my foundation look flawless.

2. Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Mascara, $29 – I’ve tried every mascara from Maybelline to Diorshow and I keep coming back to this one because it works wonders.

3. The Body Shop Love Gloss in Shade 04, $12 – The Body Shop is easily becoming one of my favourite go-to beauty stores as they have some of the best makeup products such as this lip gloss that gives just the right amount of colour and shine and is the perfect stocking stuffer.

4. Essie Nail Color in Mirror Metallics Good as Gold, $8.96 – Although I love a classic red, you can never go wrong with a good nail polish that is two parts bling and trendy.

5. Lush Ultrabland Cleanser, $16.95 – I know it has bland in the name but it really isn’t that bland – it is the perfect combination of face wash and makeup remover in one.

6. The Body Shop Carbon Eye Definer, $13.50 – I was lucky enough to snag this eyeliner during their half-off beauty promotion and it was the best buy I’ve made in a while. What really makes this eyeliner stand out from the rest is the smudger tool, which honestly, creates the easiest smokey eye I have ever done.

7. NARS And God Created The Women Set, $68 – I actually don’t have this palette (yet) but it is definitely on my wishlist seeing how anything NARS comes up with is absolute genius.

8. Maybelline Baby Lips, $4.99 – For those who remember the days when Lip Smackers was REALLY popular will really like this handy gloss that keeps your lips smooth and plump.

9. Bare Minerals Full Coverage Kabuki Brush, $35 – If you’re looking for a good brand of makeup tools, Bare Minerals line of brushes are a great option and since they are humanely made with goat hair they are super soft.

10. Bobbi Brown Pretty Powerful, $21.91 – Because real beauty is also what counts on the inside, I thought it would be appropriate to include this book from makeup guru Bobbi Brown, which features inspiring beauty and self-esteem stories.

November Celebrity Style Muse: Rachel McAdams

Choosing a celebrity for November style muse was no contest. I knew that the only Scorpion actress I wanted to profile was no one other than Canadian sweetheart Rachel McAdams. With her humble and sweet demeanor, amazing acting talent (hello, Mean Girls, The Notebook, Wedding Crashers, etc) and a fashion sense that is well beyond her years there really is no competition for this original Canadian Queen Bee (sorry, Leighton). Her feminine yet edgy LBD red carpet ensemble from the premiere of To The Wonder is the perfect outfit inspiration for those upcoming holiday parties and will add a bit of spice to your look. (P.S Her birthday was yesterday!).

Save, Spend or Splurge – Winter Jackets

Winter isn’t officially here yet, but my already numb fingers say otherwise and that it’s finally time to break out the winter jacket. Luckily, I’ve already purchased my jacket – not coat, there is a difference – from Zara (its the one here) and I love it! However, if you’re still looking here are three options to consider or to use as inspiration.

Save: Women’s Frost Free Faux-Fur Trim Jacket, $59.94, from Old Navy-Looking for a more casual winter jacket? This jacket is stylish enough to wear to work or for more laid back winter outings.

Spend: Padded Jacket, $79.95, from H&M – This versatile winter jacket is great for winter evenings out and the shiny texture adds a bit of glam.

Splurge: Military Parka, $400, from J.Crew – For a winter parka that looks sleek, fits comfortably and gets the job done this parka is the top of my list and something I would definitely invest in.

November Wants

As the cold weather approaches with fierceness, especially in Canada, my main goal is just to stay warm and cozy for the next three to four months. This November I am focused on inner and outer personal growth since I don’t believe you should wait until spring to get a fresh start. These wants (more needs, actually) are all the things I’m currently eyeing and as I write this I managed to get a copy of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. So excited – one down, seven to go!

(items listed in counterclockwise order)

1. I’ve been looking all over for the past three weeks for a winter coat that doesn’t make me feel like I’m so bundled up, circa 1993 during my childhood years. Maybe this Zara coat will do the trick?

2. I’ve read great reviews about The Alchemist and I’m so excited to read it! Got it!

3. My love for beauty is growing by the minute (as you will see in an upcoming project that is to launch next week!) and I feel that I’m finally ready to invest in a set of quality make-up brushes to my growing collection.

4. This plaid scarf actually makes me want to embrace the checkered trend.

5.I have heard good things about the Urban Decay Naked2 Palette – especially its staying power and the great neutral colours.

6. I have fallen in love with LUSH products and I am eager to try their naturally honey-infused fresh face mask.

7. Time to switch out the tank top and shorts nighties for something a little more weather appropriate like this H&M pyjama set.

8. Yes, I know the snow will be falling soon, but as of know the rain is driving me insane and I need some sturdy rain boots STAT!

October Celebrity Style Muse: Freida Pinto

When it came to choosing a Libra celebrity for October’s edition of Celebrity Style Muse, I had a very tough decision to make. I never realized how many stylish Libra women there were in Hollywood such as Alicia Silverstone, Nicky Hilton, Michelle Trachtenberg, Joy Bryant and of course, Kim Kardashian (yes, she does have her moments but she’s still beautiful nonetheless) just to name a few.

However, the choice for me was very clear when I realized Freida Pinto was a Libra. Not only is she an incredible actress (I loved Slumdog Millionaire) but she embodies (I think, anyways) everything about the Libra woman, which is talented, powerful, influential, classic and just plain gorgeous – and when it comes to fashion she always knows what to wear in any setting. Case in point – her LAX airport look that made me giddy with joy just picturing how I could emulate this look for more laid-back days.

P.S. Today is her birthday!

Tailored Sophistication: 5 Worth-it Fall Blazers

Having to work in the corporate world, I have learned one important thing every young business women, and women in general must own in their closets: a blazer. I should know this, right? Wrong, as I do not own any work-to-play blazers. At all. My colleague, who is the same age as me, is a pro at working blazers with a simple tank and black pants, ultimately looking fresh almost every day I see her – which has prompted me to finally invest in (a proper) one myself.

1. Anything with polka dots is always on my watch-list, which is why this Anthropologie Blazer ($98) is on the top of this list. Additionally, it is versatile to wear at work or going out with friends.

2. Although I gave up plaid after my retiring my high school kilt, this red checked blazer from Zara ($79.90) is right on trend with fall fashion and would be perfectly paired with sleek black leather pants.

3. When you can get a J.Crew blazer on sale, buy it. Especially since this one ($58.99) is made of cotton and supposedly flatters all body shapes. I have my eye on this one…

4. This black H&M blazer ($59.95) is also at the top of my watch-list, as it is simply chic and is perfect to be dressed-up with a pencil skirt or dress pants.

5. Red is my all-time favorite colour so chances are you will always see the colour in different variations on most of the posts I write. This blazer ($85) from Aritzia is popularly known for its special twill fabric material and I love how bright it is – which is an added plus if you want to brighten up your usual dark fall/winter wardrobe.

Splurge, Spend or Save: Detailed Black Sweaters

A lot of people will argue that a LBD (Little Black Dress) is one of the only main staples you’ll ever need in your closet, however, when it comes the cool, chilly fall weather, the need for a LBS (Little – or Big – Black Sweater depending on your style) is just as important. There is nothing more versatile and comfortable than a black sweater, as style trendsetters Jessica Alba and Olivia Palermo prove in their own individual ways. So, how do you sweeten the deal of investing in a LBS? By purchasing one with details, of course. Even if it’s a subtle pattern or transparent sleeves, a little detail can go a long way. Here are my 3 choices, all which can be styled to your preference.

Splurge: KENZO Black Quilted Leather Sweater, $890
I love this sweater to dress up or down and it will pair perfectly with burgundy pants and ankle boots.

Spend: ZARA Sweater with Transparent Panel Sides, $54.90
For a more office to party look, this sweater embodies both sophistication and style. I love how the shoulders are transparent, giving a little edge to an otherwise plain black sweater.

Save: Forever 21 Black V-Neck Sweater, $17.80
I make it my mission to always have a sweater I can wear to the mall, to work or to  a semi-dressy dinner out with friends and this V-neck option from Forever 21 works in any of those situations. Pair with statement jewelry for an effortless chic appeal.

September Celebrity Style Muse: Nicole Richie

Since I greatly enjoyed doing a Celebrity Style Muse post in July on Jennifer Lopez so much, I decided to make it a monthly post focused on a celebrity style icon of the month. Based on their star sign, I will choose a style inspiration from the glamorous world of entertainment (and sometimes the blogger world).

So, it should be no surprise I chose a celebrity Virgo whose name itself even holds style: Nicole Richie. The Fashion Star mentor and fashion designer’s fashion sense has been an evolution worth watching and whether you’re obsessed with following her on Instagram (a la me) or you just enjoy her bubbly personality she never seems to fail to effortlessly yet strategically put together an outfit that always pleases. See how you can copy her black-on-black sophisticated crop top and pants outfit (which I tailored for the fall season) that she wore at the 10th annual Style Awards during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014 at the Lincoln Center earlier this month.

Outfit Details:
Jumper – Aritzia, $75
Trousers – ZARA, $79.90
Heels – H&M, $39.95
Rings – Aldo, $12-15

Tried & True: Top Daily Makeup Essentials

skincare essentials

If you didn’t notice (although I hope you did), I was away for two weeks getting ready for my wedding which took place August 3rd. Yes, it was wonderful and one of the best moments of my life – but it was over quicker than I wanted it to be and I was back to work the following week (we are planning on taking our Honeymoon in the December or January of next year). Recovering from a special event, party or even a long day can leave you feeling and looking tired, but I learned over the years you cannot let your tiredness show – and you can prevent that from happening with trust-worthy skincare and makeup products.

Let’s start with my daily morning skincare routine:

1. I have been a devout user of the St.Ives skincare line, specifically the gentle Apricot scrub, for over 5 years now. It works great on those with sensitive skin and never dries it out my skin after it is washed off.

2. Neutrogena has been around since my mom’s time and now I know why: it works. Their oil-free SPF 15 moisturizer gives my often tired, dull skin all the moisture it needs without being oily and the absorbent formula makes my face feel soft to the touch every time.

3. A new member of my “exclusive” skincare go-to is the Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, which I use in the morning and evening before I go to bed. I started using this product last year and it hasn’t failed me yet, as I see constant improvement whether its from more brighter, even skin color or the amazing job it does to remove dark spots on the delicate parts of my cheek and under eye.

4. I know face wipes are often used for taking off makeup, but I like to prep my face in the morning by having a completely clean slate, and these Olay wipes do the trick to take off all excess dirt that may still have been left there from the previous night or if the scrub fails to remove stubborn mascara.
